Will There Be Another ‘Space Jam’ Movie After ‘A New Legacy’?

0

This weekend, Warner Bros. said “Welcome to the Space Jam, again,” with Space Jam: A New Legacy, a standalone sequel to the 1996 Space Jam that is now playing in theaters and on HBO Max.

Instead of Michael Jordan, this time NBA star LeBron James stepped in to play basketball with the Looney Tunes you know and love, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny, and more. Director Malcolm D. Lee ups the anty, also including cameos from Warner Bros. properties like Rick and Morty, Harry Potter, Casablanca, The Iron Giant, and many more.

After going that big, it’s hard to imagine going any bigger in another Space Jam movie. No spoilers, but Space Jam: A New Legacy ties things up with a fairly neat bow. There’s nothing left hanging, and no set-up for a continuation of the story. Of course, that was also true for the first Space Jam movie, and 25 years later, here we are. Here’s what we know right now about the possibility of a Space Jam: A New Legacy sequel.

WILL THERE BE A SPACE JAM 3?

There are currently no official plans for Warner Bros. to make another Space Jam movie.

That said, former NBA star Baron Davis recently expressed interest in directing a third Space Jam movie, and even pitched his idea in an interview with The New York Times. “I created this world called Nearth where Nearthians exist, and they protect against pollution, things like that,” Davis said. “And basically, LeBron, Steph, all the major stars, they’d go down to Nearth and realize that we’re ruining our planet.”

Davis said he pitched the idea to both LeBron James and Steph Curry, but that the basketball stars turned him down. So it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll be seeing that version of Space Jam 3 any time soon.

Whether or not there will be another Space Jam movie likely depends on how much money the movie makes for Warner Bros. The studio is no doubt banking on the film’s nostalgic lure to make it a hit at the box office. Even though it will also be streaming on HBO Max at the same time it’s in theaters, the success of Disney’s Black Widow in theaters last week demonstrated that folks were willing to go to a theater to see a movie that was also available at home. However, while Black Widow costs $30 on Disney+, Space Jam: A New Legacy will stream on HBO Max for free. On top of that, reviews for Space Jam 2 have been less than favorable so far.

That said, there are plenty of examples of critical flops that make enough money to fuel a sequel. We’ll just have to wait and see!
