Two children — one only 8 months old — died in a fire that ripped through a Jersey City home overnight, according to authorities.
The infant, along with an 11-year-old child, were killed in the blaze that began on Martin Luther King Drive near Union Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said early Thursday.
A frantic mother approached responding police, yelling that her children were still inside the home, according to ABC 7.
Police couldn’t make it past the flames, but responding firefighters found two victims on the second floor, the outlet reported.
“We got banging on the door, people were screaming telling us, ‘Help! Get out!’” a resident told the outlet.
“I’m just shocked,” another added. “I’ve sent prayers out, hopefully for the cops that are injured. We thank y’all for trying to help us.”
The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is investigating the fire, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The cause was not immediately available.
