“What would you rather be? A lion or a panda?” That was the question that Juno Temple‘s Keeley posed to a group that included Ted (Jason Sudeikis), Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), and then-boyfriend Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) all the way back in Ted Lasso Season 1 Episode 2. Now, as we’re counting down the days until Ted Lasso Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+, we thought it would be fun to revisit this hilarious moment with the Ted Lasso cast off-screen.
Decider sat down with the cast of Ted Lasso a few weeks ago to press them on all things Ted Lasso Season 2. But in between asking spoiler-filled questions and gushing over our favorite onscreen ‘ships, we posed the same question that Keeley once did: What would you rather be? A lion or a panda?
Hannah Waddingham herself kicked off the great debate by exuberantly agreeing with her alter-ego, Rebecca. “Uh, hello? I’m Leo, Leo rising, and Year of the Tiger,” she said, listing off her astrological credentials. “That’s why I love that last line, when [Rebecca] says, ‘What’s black and white and red all over? A panda that gets anywhere near a f*cking lion.'”
Later, Ted Lasso star, producer, and writer Brendan Hunt broke down the debate with Coach Beard’s own philosophical bent: “I mean the lion/panda dichotomy feels like the lover and fighter dichotomy. I’m no fighter. I am your panda. Come to me. Hug me. Try this bamboo. It’s gonna make you feel weird for a little while, but you’re gonna like what it does to you after that.”
After we polled everyone from the likes of Dani Rojas (Cristo Fernadez) and Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) to Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Roy (Brett Goldstein) and newbie Sharon (Sarah Niles), there was a winner in the lion vs. panda fight! But do you agree with the Ted Lasso cast?
Ted Lasso Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 23.
