David Schwimmer Ripped By ‘Friends’ Monkey Trainer: “He Just Really Resented the Monkey Being There”

It’s no secret that David Schwimmer wasn’t too fond of one of his frequent Friends costars, Marcel the monkey. The actor, who played Ross Gellar on the sitcom for years, even admitted he “hated” the monkey, telling Entertainment Weekly in 1995 that he wished the animal were dead. But now in a new interview with The Sun, Marcel’s trainer is speaking up about the strained relationship between the actor and his difficult scene partner and is calling out Schwimmer for his comments.

“I have never ever watched Friends because of Schwimmer’s comments about the monkeys. I have refused to ever since he did an interview after the animals got written out of the show and he said they tried to bite him and throw poop at him. They didn’t do any of that,” trainer Mike Morris said, per Uproxx. He added, “None of it is true, when I was there, none of that ever happened.”

Morris said he’s speaking up because he thinks Schwimmer was being disrespectful to Monkey, one of the capuchins who shared the role of Marcel and died at age 36 last year. The other capuchin, Katie, is still alive. During the HBO Max Friends reunion, which aired on the streamer earlier this year, Schwimmer looked back on his time with the monkeys on set, accusing the animal of not doing its job correctly.

“Here is my problem: The monkey, obviously, was trained. It had to hit its mark and do its thing right at the perfect time,” he explained during the reunion. “What inevitably began to happen was we would all have choreographed bits kind of timed out, and it would get messed up, because the monkey didn’t do its job right. It was time for Marcel to f*ck off.”

Morris said he doesn’t agree with what Schwimmer said and that he thinks the Friends star is to blame for the difficulties on set. “I just don’t agree with it, if anything he threw off their timing if we want to be truthful,” he said. “Schwimmer was fine with the monkeys for the first couple of episodes and happy to be there. But people would laugh at the monkey and I think he got jealous because it wasn’t him getting the laughs. He seemed to get a little bitter about them being there after that.”

He added, “It got to the point where he just really resented the monkey being there, he obviously had a problem with her and he’s still talking about it now… I find it despicable for him to still be speaking ill of her.”

Marcel first appeared on the show in 1994 and went on to star in 8 episodes before leaving after Season 1. The show explained his absence by sending him to the San Diego Zoo.
